I disagree that age is the only factor in evaluating a child's progress. While age maybe important in the evaluation of a child's progress, it is not the only important factor. Age is used as a guideline to determine the different developmental milestones and what is expected at each stage. Some children develop faster than others and as a result may reach a developmental milestone before the expected age of development. For example, toddlers are expected to start walking by twelve months, but some toddlers start walking before twelve month and others much later.

Developmental domains are also important in evaluating a child's progress. Milestones are a guide to determine what is expected of a child in each domain. Development milestones are skills that children are expected to acquire within a specific time-frame.

It is important that parents know and understand the time-frame at which children are supposed to reach their developmental milestones. Parents normally asks questions about their children's progress and often compares them with other children. developmental milestones are used to help parents understand; 1) all children are not the same, 2) children reach their developmental milestones at their own pace, 3) they should not worry that the child have not reached hi/ her developmental milestone, and 4) concerns can be discussed with the child's teacher for support.

Support can be provided by the teacher through encouraging parents to create activities in the home to promote the child's development. For example, in the case of a three year old whose milestone in language and literacy needs enhancing the following activities can be used to promote the child's milestones; watching child oriented television programs to enhance speech development, reading to the child, keep short conversation with the child, and like asking about a story you read or a television program viewed together.

Early childhood practitioner/ teachers must create age appropriate activities to encourage development. These activities must also encourage the child to explore and learn at his/ her own pace. For example, a child's cognitive development to promote learning, thinking and problem solving includes developmental milestones such as; building towers with six or more blocks, doing puzzles with three or four pieces, copies a shape (triangle) with crayons or pencils and turns the pages of a book one at a time. The teacher must create a classroom setting with materials and activities included to enhance the area of development. The appropriate learning environment will promote the child's development in the required domain.
