linear regression model to figure out the incidence of hip fractures in the region. Determining the


incidence of hip fractures was important before launching a new successful program in the community.


We know from our readings that a linear regression is a valuable tool to help businesses with strategic


planning and developing. Linear regression is also an approach for modeling the relationship between a


scalar dependent variable y and one or more explanatory variables (or independent variable) denoted X.


In linear regression, the relationships are modeled using linear predictor functions whose unknown


model parameters are estimated from the data collection (Cohen, 2003).


The analyst collected data to determine the number of hip fractures from 1994-2002 also using a linear


regression model to establish the potential hip fractures up to 2015. Following the same methods, the


same data was collected during the period of 2004-2009 in order to ascertain the proposed model


proved to be exact or not. Since the goal is forecasting, linear regression can be used to fit a predictive


model to an observed data set of y and X values. After developing such a model, if an additional value of


X is then given without its accompanying value of y, the fitted model can be used to make a prediction of


the value of y. In the data collection the y is described as the observed incidences of hip fractures and


the X is described as estimate incidences due to total number of reported fractures. The X can predict


the y because the total number of reported fractures can determine what percentage could lead to


actually having a hip fracture.


After the analysis is complete, the article reports that the results support that the estimation of hip


fracture incidence by constructing a mathematical regression model that can help health authorities to


establish early intervention strategies.


Hip fractures are a real health problem in the elderly [1]. Before launching a program for hip fracture


prevention, knowing the incidence of hip fractures in a determined region is mandatory. In 2006 we


published in Archives of Osteoporosis a manuscript on the incidence of osteoporotic hip fractures in our


area (Salamanca, Spain) over the period 1994?2002, establishing a mathematical regression model to



estimate the number of fractures up to 2015 [2]. Following the same methods used in this previous work


[2], we collected data on hip fractures during the period 2004?2009 in order to ascertain whether the


proposed model proved to be exact or not. These data are presented in Tables 1 and 2, and they show


that the incidence of osteoporotic hip fractures in 2004?2009 concurs with the estimation of our


mathematical model. Although incidence of fractures is increasing with time, it seems to reach a plateau


or even showing some decrease. Some authors have pointed out the fact that the incidence of hip


fractures is declining in the last few years [3, 4]. This change in the trend towards a decrease in hip


fracture incidence is not homogeneous and may vary among countries. In addition, the gender should


also be taken into account [5, 6]. In Spain, the data available show differences between regions [7],


although the trend appears similar to our study [8].
